In 1999 I saw a documentary about a world champion, female boxer. This movie single-handedly inspired me to turn my love of boxing and kickboxing classes at a local gym into a full-fledged, professional aspiration. I quickly changed gyms and began training at Granelli's Boxing and Kickboxing Gym in the Potrero Hill District of San Francisco. Thanks to a wonderful trainer named Vajra Granelli, I not only learned the sweet science of boxing, but I also learned the art of teaching group exercise classes. I became a USA Boxing certified Coach and after nine years of teaching boxing, I still love it. I look forward to watching a student smile when they hear the crack of their perfectly thrown jab hitting the focus mitt. I enjoy hearing the words "good workout" or "fun class" or "Gina, you're mean". While I am never actually mean, I love to play the part of "mean" in an effort to make learning the skills behind an aggressive, brutal sport fun.
